How to use PROPER Function in Excel

Proper Case function helps in making text in proper case, i.e. First letter capital and rest lower case for all words. Proper case function is helpful to properly format the content in Excel file. All the text that is not present in proper cases, has random upper or lower case characters, Proper case helps in creating new text with formatted characters. In this article we will discuss how to use PROPER function in Excel with the help of an example.

John has customer spend data for his company. He is looking forward to create updated Full Name column. The new Full Name column should have Upper caps first letter and rest of the letters as lower case for each of the word.

How to use PROPER Function in Excel

Convert text to Proper Case

  • Step 1: Proper function needs only one parameter. The text that needs to be converted to proper case. Here we are looking forward to convert Full Name column to proper case. So the cell we will pass to the formula is E5.
                  =Proper(E5)
How to use PROPER Function in Excel
  • Step 2: Copy the cell H5 and paste the formulas to rest of the cells in the column. This will generate updated Full Name column for whole table.
